Intuit, the U.S.-based financial software company behind TurboTax, QuickBooks and Credit Karma, has announced plans to reduce approximately 17% of its global workforce as it accelerates investments in artificial intelligence and adapts to changing market dynamics.

The restructuring will affect nearly 3,000 employees and is expected to result in restructuring charges of between USD 300 million and USD 340 million.

The announcement comes as the company revised downward its annual revenue outlook for TurboTax, citing softer-than-expected tax filing volumes during the latest filing season.

TurboTax Forecast Revised Lower

Intuit lowered its full-year TurboTax revenue guidance to between USD 5.277 billion and USD 5.282 billion, compared with its previous forecast of USD 5.305 billion to USD 5.330 billion.

The company also indicated that U.S. tax filings this season are expected to be approximately two million below broader market projections.

The updated guidance unsettled investors, with Intuit’s shares falling sharply following the announcement.

AI Moves to the Centre of Strategy

Alongside the restructuring, Intuit reaffirmed its commitment to expanding AI capabilities across its product portfolio.

The company has been embedding artificial intelligence into its platforms to enhance customer experiences, automate routine processes and provide more personalised financial insights.

A key element of this strategy is Intuit’s multi-year partnership with Anthropic, one of the leading developers of generative AI technologies. Through this collaboration, Intuit aims to accelerate the deployment of advanced AI capabilities across products serving consumers, small businesses and tax professionals.

The partnership reflects a broader trend in which established financial software providers are increasingly aligning themselves with specialised AI companies to strengthen their technological capabilities.

What This Means for the Tax Technology Sector

Beyond the headline workforce reductions, the announcement provides an important snapshot of the forces currently reshaping the tax technology landscape.

Three themes stand out.

Changing Filing Trends

Lower-than-anticipated tax filing volumes suggest that providers may face a more competitive environment, placing greater emphasis on customer retention and differentiated services.

Increased AI Investment

Technology companies are reallocating resources towards artificial intelligence initiatives, viewing AI not simply as a product enhancement but as a core driver of future growth.

Evolving Customer Expectations

Users increasingly expect digital tax solutions to offer intuitive experiences, real-time support and personalised guidance. Meeting these expectations will require continued investment in innovation and intelligent automation.

Looking Ahead

Intuit’s announcement highlights how rapidly the tax technology sector is evolving. Companies are being required to respond simultaneously to shifting market conditions, changing taxpayer behaviours and the emergence of powerful new technologies.

While the workforce reductions represent a difficult chapter for those affected, they also illustrate how artificial intelligence is influencing strategic decisions at the highest levels of the industry.

For tax professionals and businesses alike, the developments serve as a reminder that the future of tax technology will be shaped not only by regulatory change, but increasingly by the pace of technological innovation.
