Tax technology company Fonoa has announced a $110 million Series C funding round alongside the acquisition of Indirect Tax Edge (Edge), a tax compliance platform previously owned by PwC.
The funding round was led by Headline, with participation from Eurazeo, Forestay Capital, Index Ventures, OMERS, Coatue, and Dawn Capital. The company said the new investment will support further product development and international expansion.
The acquisition of Edge adds indirect tax reporting, e-filing, transactional data management, and tax analytics capabilities to Fonoa’s existing platform, which currently provides tax determination, tax ID validation, and e-invoicing services.
The move comes as multinational businesses face growing compliance obligations driven by the rapid expansion of digital tax reporting, e-invoicing mandates, and real-time reporting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
Expanding Across the Indirect Tax Lifecycle
With the acquisition, Fonoa aims to provide a more integrated approach to indirect tax management by combining tax determination, invoicing, reporting, and filing within a single platform.
The company said Edge will continue to be developed and integrated into Fonoa’s technology stack, including its AI capabilities and modular tax infrastructure.
According to Fonoa, the combined platform will support the full indirect tax lifecycle, including tax ID validation, tax determination, e-invoicing, VAT and GST reporting, tax returns, and analytics.
Growing Tax Technology Market
The transaction highlights continued investment in tax technology as businesses seek solutions capable of managing increasingly complex compliance requirements.
Tax authorities worldwide are introducing digital reporting frameworks that require businesses to calculate, report, and transmit tax data in near real time. These changes have accelerated demand for technology platforms that can automate compliance processes and reduce manual intervention.
Founded by former Uber executives, Fonoa has focused on supporting digital and cross-border business models that operate across multiple tax jurisdictions.
The company reports that its platform currently supports tax determination across more than 190 jurisdictions, validates tax identification numbers in over 100 countries, and processes more than one billion transactions annually.
Its customer base includes companies such as Uber, Netflix, Canva, Booking.com, and Nebius.
PwC to Continue Providing Tax Services
Although ownership of Edge is transferring to Fonoa, PwC will continue to provide indirect tax reporting, consulting, and managed services to clients using the platform.
The arrangement allows Fonoa to focus on technology development while leveraging PwC’s global tax expertise and advisory capabilities.
Industry observers view the transaction as part of a broader trend toward closer collaboration between tax advisory firms and technology providers as organizations seek more integrated compliance solutions.
Focus on AI and Automation
The latest investment and acquisition also reflect growing interest in the use of artificial intelligence within tax functions.
Fonoa has positioned its platform around the concept of a Tax Operating System, using automation and AI to help organizations manage compliance obligations, monitor regulatory changes, identify anomalies, and streamline reporting processes.
As governments continue to digitize tax administration and increase reporting requirements, technology providers are expected to play an increasingly important role in helping businesses navigate evolving compliance obligations.
The combination of additional capital and expanded product capabilities places Fonoa among the most closely watched companies in the global tax technology sector as the market continues to evolve.
